Payment Status Not Available

‘Payment Status Not Available’ message

The IRS says there could be several reasons for this error message:

  1. The IRS stimulus check web tool doesn’t have your data yet
    • The IRS ecently updated its Get My Payment FAQ to explain that some people’s information just isn’t in the system yet: “The application doesn’t yet have your data; we’re working on adding more data to allow more people to use it.”
    • The IRS is working as quickly as it can to update it. If you keep checking back every day, expect to get an update on your stimulus check as to where and when it was deposited or mailed.
  2. You aren’t eligible for a stimulus check
    • According to IRS.gov:  Who is eligible for the economic impact payment?
    • Who is eligible:
      • Tax filers with adjusted gross income up to $75,000 for individuals and up to $150,000 for married couples filing joint returns will receive the full payment. For filers with income above those amounts, the payment amount is reduced by $5 for each $100 above the $75,000/$150,000 thresholds. Single filers with income exceeding $99,000 and $198,000 for joint filers with no children are not eligible. Social Security recipients and railroad retirees who are otherwise not required to file a tax return are also eligible and will not be required to file a return.
      • Eligible taxpayers who filed tax returns for either 2019 or 2018 will automatically receive an economic impact payment of up to $1,200 for individuals or $2,400 for married couples and up to $500 for each qualifying child.
  3. You filed taxes online using H&R Block, TurboTax, or Jackson Hewitt
    • Millions of people are facing issues receiving their stimulus money because of a glitch related to the online tax filing services: TurboTax, H&R Block, or Jackson Hewitt.
    • The tax filing companies typically receive your tax refund directly from the IRS into their master account, then distribute the money into your bank account after taking out their fees. Since the these tax agencies act as a middleman, the IRS might not have your direct deposit information.  Therefore, the IRS doesn’t have it to deposit your stimulus check.
    • In some instances, the stimulus checks were sent to the tax filing company’s master account.  The tax filing company then sends the money back to the IRS and the IRS then needs to reprocess the payment.  This causes major delays.
  4. You recently used the Non-Filers section of the web portal
    • If you recently used the dedicated website for non-filers, that could be delaying your check status as the processing for non-filers gets completed.
  5. You filed your taxes, but the IRS is still processing your tax return
    • If you recently filed either your 2018 or 2019 tax return, the IRS might still be processing it. Until it’s processed, the IRS won’t be able to determine your stimulus check eligibility.
    • The IRS processing time is slow at this time.
  6. You are an SSA, RRB Form 1099, SSI, or VA recipient
    • The IRS says that they are “working with your agency to issue your payment; your information is not available in this app yet.”
  7. The IRS sent the payment to the wrong bank account.
    • Once you can track your stimulus check’s status, double-check that the last four digits of the account number listed are your bank account and not someone else’s. The IRS says you will need to contact your bank for further help if the check was sent to the wrong account.
  8. You entered the wrong information
    • Double-check to make sure your information is entirely correct.  If you encounter the error message after too many failed tried you’ll be locked out of the system for 24 hours.2
  9. You didn’t file your taxes in 2018 or 2019

The IRS said these stimulus payments will be available to eligible taxpayers through the end of 2020.

The IRS updates the #GetMyPayment tool once per day.
